NRL: Melbourne Storm's Zac Lomax Transfer Rumors Spark Club Feeding Frenzy (2026)

The Melbourne Storm is likely not the only NRL club interested in acquiring Zac Lomax from Parramatta. While Melbourne has faced criticism during a recent conference for pursuing Lomax, legendary halfback Cooper Cronk suggests that other teams may also express interest.

Lomax was permitted to leave his contract with the Eels early, despite having three years remaining, as he aimed to join the R360 league. However, his plans were thrown off course when the rebel league postponed its launch by two years.

Although the Eels allowed Lomax to part ways, this decision came with stipulations. He will not be eligible to play for another NRL team until 2029 unless the Eels provide their consent. For that to take place, the Storm will need to make a significant offer.

Cronk shared on the Kayo Sports NRL Podcast, "I believe Melbourne has a legitimate opportunity to pursue him, but the Eels retain rights over Lomax. Ultimately, it’s up to the Eels to decide. If they receive an attractive compensation package, then it's a different story; otherwise, they should keep Lomax. It must be worthwhile for them. They are in control here. All clubs might express interest in Lomax, but any deal must benefit the Eels.

The decision rests solely with the Eels and coach Jason Ryles regarding their willingness to let Lomax go. If they believe they can secure something valuable in exchange for him, then they might agree to a transfer. Until such an offer materializes, this situation will remain unresolved, continuously attracting attention.

Cronk emphasized, "Melbourne will not be the only club reaching out to the Eels. This situation will persist."

As for the Eels, they need new outside backs following Lomax’s departure. However, Cronk is adamant that the Storm would not consider a trade involving their top wingers, Xavier Coates or Will Warbrick, as part of any deal. He stated, "While a player-for-player swap might seem reasonable, it isn't likely to happen. If I were the Eels, I would reject any offers that do not include Xavier Coates."

Ennis supported this view, noting, "Certainly, players like Coates or Warbrick would be sought after by the Eels to fill their outside back positions." He also pointed out that the Eels might be in the market for front-row talent, especially since Junior Paulo is aging, while the Storm possesses promising young forwards.

Despite this potential interest, Ennis expressed doubts about the Storm's true motivation for targeting Lomax. He questioned, "What’s the rationale behind pursuing Lomax? With Sua Fa’alogo at fullback and Coates and Warbrick on the wings, where exactly would he fit?"

Braith Anasta suggested that the Storm might aim to utilize Lomax in the center position, pointing out that Jack Howarth, who is projected to play left center in 2025, could be better suited for a role in the back row. Anasta elaborated, "We've discussed this before, but assuming that’s their strategy, it makes sense, as Howarth isn’t a natural center, and it’s clear Melbourne could use more offensive strength on their edges."
